We spent a few weeks exchanging emails and then I took a trip out to San Luis Obispo for some intensive discussion and testing. They were looking for 2 features to make their deployment of dual boot Macs easier: Automatic naming of Windows at first boot (for stand alone imaging), and booting WinPE and imaging (via SCCM). It all came together in the last few months thanks to some amazing folks at Cal Poly San Luis Obispo. Many admins have been booting WinPE from a USB Flash drive and imaging from SCCM / MDT, but booting either from the network or from a partition would be much preferable to inserting a USB drive in all machines.

However, we had a couple of stumbling blocks: Windows had to be booted in memory so that the partition could be written to. I have worked with folks at lots of different organizations and schools, and we have gotten WinPE environments booting on the Mac. WinPE has been a feature long requested for Winclone, and we have been trying different ways to implement it. On restore, you select the index of the imaging that you want in Winclone, and all the correct files are restored. But here is the neat part: Each index can contains a reference to all the files rather than just the ones that have changed. So Winclone leverages both, but for incremental imaging, Winclone does a backup of a volume that is already in the WIM, but only the files that have changed are added to the WIM. WIM files can also be booted from, and store a bootable version of Windows. A single WIM can contain multiple editions of Windows to be installed, but have about the same size.

If you consider Windows 10 Enterprise versus Windows 10 Education, the majority of files would be the same. This was primarily for distributing many editions of Windows in a single WIM file. Each WIM file can contain multiple images (stored by index), and no file is duplicated across the entire WIM. The switch to WIM was driven by a couple of reasons: future flexibility with Windows imaging and 512 to 4k physical block size. Incremental imaging became a possibility when we switched to file-based Windows Imaging Format (WIM). Nearly since Winclone was released, we have had people asking about these two features and I loved the idea, but the implementation turned out to be tricky. The two features are incremental imaging and imaging Boot Camp via SCCM. Winclone 7 introduces two new features that have long been a requested for Winclone and I am quite proud that we finally got them accomplished. Winclone images, migrates, and restores Boot Camp partitions on the Mac, both for consumers and for mass deployment in enterprise environments. Today we released Winclone 7, and it is the most ambitious release yet.

If the subscription is not renewed, the Winclone Pro license expires and you can no longer deploy Windows with Winclone. Winclone Pro Enterprise is sold as a yearly subscription based on the number of Macs that use Winclone to deploy Windows.

We are also available to discuss options with Windows admins on creating images and injecting drivers into Windows images that will be deployed on Macs in your environment. This includes integrating with Microsoft MDT/SCCM as well booting Macs into a WinPE environment. During your trial and after you purchase Winclone Pro Enterprise, we will assist with planning, creating, testing, and deploying Boot Camp images. Winclone Pro Enterprise includes enterprise integration support, including phone and email support. The license does not expire, but any future major upgrades must be purchased, including major upgrades that provide compatibility with future versions of macOS and Windows.

Macs that install a package created with Winclone Pro must have a license. Each Mac that uses Winclone Pro or a Winclone Pro package must have a license. Winclone Pro is sold as a perpetual license. Winclone Pro provides the features for importing WinPE to use in MDT environments, but any assistance with creating, locating or modifying Microsoft resources in your environment is not included in the support. Winclone Pro includes support for all the features in Winclone, including package creation, post-install setup, and WIM import.

However, the licensing and support for the software is different. Winclone Pro and Winclone Pro Enterprise both include the macOS application Winclone Pro.
